When is a Well-Architected
Review right for you?

There are several reasons to conduct a WAR with CleanSlate. Lowering your technology costs, right-sizing your resources, and optimizing performance are just a few. Maybe one of the most important, though, is discovering issues you never even knew existed. AWS and CleanSlate recommend a review every 12-18 months.

The 5 Pillars of the Well-Architected Framework

Operational Excellence

The operational excellence pillar focuses on running and monitoring systems to deliver business value, and continually improving processes and procedures. Key topics include automating changes, responding to events, and defining standards to manage daily operations.

The security pillar focuses on protecting information and systems. Key topics include confidentiality and integrity of data, identifying and managing who can do what with privilege management, protecting systems, and establishing controls to detect security events.

The reliability pillar focuses on ensuring a workload performs its intended function correctly and consistently and can quickly recover from failures to meet business and customer demand. Key topics include distributed system design, recovery planning, and how to handle change.

Performance Efficiency

The performance efficiency pillar focuses on using IT and computing resources efficiently. Key topics include selecting the right resource types and sizes based on workload requirements, monitoring performance, and making informed decisions to maintain efficiency as business needs evolve.

Cost Optimization

The cost optimization pillar focuses on avoiding unnecessary costs. Key topics include understanding and controlling where money is being spent, selecting the most appropriate and right number of resource types, analyzing spend over time, and scaling to meet business needs without overspending.

Our Process

Initial Review

To get the ball rolling, we begin by identifying the workload to review. We then discuss and compare your architecture against the five pillars of the framework.

Well-Architected Review

We use software analytics tools to identify resources and cloud environment characteristics. We also conduct discovery sessions between our architects and your team. Together, we’ll gain a clear picture of your current situation and opportunities for improvement.

Findings and Reports

We will present and provide a customized assessment of our findings as well as a recommendations report. Each will detail the current state of your environment and any steps needed to address issues. Together, we’ll develop a prioritized plan to remediate 25% of the critical findings disclosed in the WAR.

The Repeatable Process

Maintaining and optimizing your cloud environment is an ongoing process. The Well-Architected Framework establishes the roadmap, but it’s the WAR that ensures your business continues to innovate and grow. We recommend scheduling one every 12-18 months.
