A second contributing factor is that business leaders are often brought in to approve AI initiatives rather than to co-own them. What Erodes While the Gap Stays Open 

The most immediate cost is credibility. Executives who funded AI with specific expectations do not recalibrate those expectations quietly. When the connection between AI investment and business outcome stays unclear, the default interpretation is that the investment is not working. Once that interpretation takes hold, future funding requests face a higher burden of proof, and the programs that most need investment to reach impact become harder to sustain.

There is also a team cost. Engineers and data scientists who build toward production, see their work not adopted, and repeat the cycle with the next initiative start to lose confidence in the program itself. The technical work continues. The motivation behind it changes. And the organizations that most need their AI talent engaged and building toward something real are the ones watching that engagement quietly drain away. 

Where the Reconnection Starts 

The reconnection between AI and business value does not start with a better model or a new tool. It starts with a different question at the beginning of an initiative: what specific business outcome are we trying to change, and how will we measure whether AI changed it? 

That question sounds simple. In practice, it requires business leaders and technical teams to align before building starts, which is harder than building the technology itself. But it is the only way to create AI work that produces an answer when leadership asks what the business is getting from it.
