Challenge

The client had several legacy applications running on an AIX based IBM WebSphere Application Server platform that needed to have a hardware refresh due to maintaining hardware support. Additionally, the client was paying for yearly maintenance fees to keep their software support agreements. This platform was no longer in the technology roadmap based upon a modernized set of corporate IT policies and was looking to modernize the applications. However, these were business-critical applications, and the existing IT staff did not have the proper expertise or time to remediate the situation in a timely fashion. With an upcoming software renewal and hardware refresh pending, the client was looking for options.

"This project was viewed as a huge success on multiple fronts as CleanSlate helped modernized numerous business-critical applications while providing an almost immediate return on investment (ROI) of the migration costs."

Solutions

CleanSlate put together a strategy to migrate off the current platform and take the necessary steps to modernize the applications to fit within the client’s new technology roadmap. An application analysis was performed using the Red Hat® Application Migration Toolkit to understand the viability of performing a significant java upgrade to the base applications and worked through remediation of the issues. The application was also ported to a Pivotal Spring Boot framework running on Tomcat to avoid any of the software licensing fees the client was currently purchasing. This effort provided the foundation to containerize the application with Docker to allow for efficient development environments and streamline the client’s CI/CD process. The CI/CD process was built using Microsoft Azure DevOps and then deployed to a Red Hat® OpenShift® platform. The CleanSlate team also worked with each of the client’s development groups to help them understand how containerization benefited their development efforts. Onboarding new members to their development teams were now significantly faster since the development environment setup was a much simpler process utilizing Docker containers.
